In this 2-part set of classes (originally part of the Tree Challenge 10-2025), you’ll paint side by side with me and explore how trees reflect emotion — from whimsical gestures to quiet melancholy.

Each session includes a full real-time demonstration (2 hours each) with detailed explanations of technical steps and artistic decisions, so you can follow along and understand not only how but why each brushstroke happens.

🌸 Session 1 – The Pink Willow

Task 1: Expressing Mood Through Color

We start with an unexpected color palette — pinks, oranges, and teals — to show how color can become the language of emotion. You’ll learn how to:

• Use a nontraditional base color for a tree trunk while keeping harmony and depth.
• Convey wind and movement through shape and gesture.
• Make composition and distance choices that change the painting’s emotional tone.

This session is about painting from feeling rather than formula — finding your personal voice through color and freedom.

🍂 Session 2 – The Melancholy Side of Autumn

Task 4: Showing the End of the Life Cycle

In this double study, we explore the poetic side of autumn through two different technical and compositional approaches:

Painting 1: A wind-blown tree with a silvery trunk — exploring rhythm, motion, and expressive lines. 

Painting 2: A close-up of a single fading branch — quiet, intimate, and full of tenderness.

You’ll see how to express emotion through light, texture, and composition, turning subtle transitions of season into powerful visual stories.

MATERIALS WE ARE GOING TO USE IN THESE SESSIONS 

You can use the materials you already have — here’s what I use in the sessions:

• Paper: 3 sheets of cold press 100% cotton watercolor paper, 300 gsm (approx. 12x16” / 31x41 cm) •
• Drawing paper for sketching and planning compositions
• Watercolors (professional grade; choose your usual palette including pinks, oranges, teals, and neutrals)
• Brushes: a selection of medium and large round brushes, one flat or hake brush for expressive washes (you will get list of my basic materials in class materials as well) 
• Watercolor pencils in neutral colors and fountain pen/drawing pen
