About the Lesson

In this session, we will work with one of the most powerful (and honestly underrated) tools in watercolor — grouping through washes.

Using a beautiful Amsterdam architectural scene, I will guide you through a way of painting that allows you to simplify complex subjects, bring clarity to your composition, and create that effortless “easy done”, slightly unfinished sketching look — while still keeping a strong, intentional focal point.

This lesson is a continuation of the Unity & Grouping module from the Architecture Sketching Course — but here we go deeper and more practical.

We will explore how watercolor washes and line work (pen or fountain pen) can work together, not compete — helping you organize the scene and guide the viewer’s eye naturally.

What We Will Focus On
  • How to group elements using watercolor washes
  • Creating a clear focal point in a complex architectural scene
  • Balancing loose washes with defined line work
  • Achieving the “unfinished”, light, sketch-like feeling without losing structure
  • Making composition decisions before painting (so you don’t get lost halfway 😄)

Lesson Structure

✏️ Part 1 — Composition & Approach

We begin with understanding the scene and making key decisions:

  • What to simplify
  • What to group together
  • Where to place the focal point

This is where the painting actually starts, even before the brush touches the paper.

🎨 Part 2 — Step-by-Step Painting

We move into the full process:

  • Building large watercolor washes
  • Integrating pen or fountain pen work
  • Adjusting, simplifying, and refining the image

You’ll see the full thinking process behind each step — not just what to do, but why.

Materials List

• Cotton watercolor paper (approx. 12×16”, cold press)
• Sketching paper + pencil
• Eraser
• Drawing pen (0.5) or fountain pen
• Watercolor paints (your usual palette)
• Brushes (your usual set)
• Water container
• Paper towels
• Water sprayer

✨ My basic palette and brushes will be attached in the lesson materials for your convenience.

Optional:
White acrylic or gesso + printing roller (I may show how to fix or adjust areas — but this is absolutely not required)
