🌿 Paint Summer Greenery That Feels Alive — Where Every Green Is a Decision, Not a Guess ✨

A summer landscape can feel impossible to paint. So much green. So many leaves. So many branches all tangled together... And it's so easy to end up with a flat green blob — or a chaotic mess where the eye has nowhere to rest.

But a strong summer scene isn't about painting every leaf. It's about deciding: which tree leads, which fades back, where to simplify, where to let the watercolor breathe, and how to turn a wall of green into real space with depth and air.

In this workshop, I'll show you how I read a tree by its personality and simplify it without losing its character — and how I build a believable, atmospheric landscape out of all that summer foliage.

This is not only "paint with me." This is think with me 🤎 🖋

We'll go behind the scenes of the decision-making — so you can later look at any group of trees, any green summer view, and know exactly how to turn it into a strong, dynamic painting of your

💡 What Makes This Workshop Special

Most landscape lessons hand you a reference and walk you through copying it.

Here we go deeper:

✅ how to simplify trees by reading their personality — not by counting leaves

✅ composition for landscapes — focal point, dynamic vs. stable compositions, and rhythm

✅ how to create rhythm in an almost abstract scene of pure nature

✅ how to decide what to paint and what to ignore in all that greenery

✅ how to build depth, air, and atmosphere — a three-dimensional space, not a flat green wall

✅ how to enrich your greens with unexpected colors so the landscape stays alive

✨ You'll leave with a clear, repeatable system for summer landscapes — one you can reuse on
every grove of trees you fall in love with.

🎨 What We Will Do — The Program

1⃣ Simplifying Trees by Personality (~30 min)

We start with the heart of it: how to look at a tree and simplify its summer foliage based on its personality — its shape, its weight, its rhythm — instead of getting lost trying to paint every leaf.

2⃣ Composition Basics for Landscapes (~30 min)

Where to place your focal point. Dynamic compositions vs. static, stable ones — and when to use each. Then rhythm: how to create it in an almost abstract nature scene so the whole landscape feels connected and alive.

3⃣ Warm-Up — Tree Studies (~30–40 min)

Several quick studies of different trees, exploring how to use different brushes for the tree crown and the foliage. This is where your hand loosens up and the marks start to feel natural.

Break — 20 min

4⃣ Painting 1Greens & Air Perspective (9×12") (~50–60 min)

Working from a reference:
palette choice, mixing greens that don't go muddy, and using air perspective to push trees back into the distance and pull others forward.

5⃣ Painting 2 — Final Large Landscape (A3 or 12×16") (~70–80 min)

Our big piece, step by step with every stage explained. Working from a reference, we'll decide what to paint and what to ignore, how not to get lost in all the greenery, and how to build a real three-dimensional space with depth and atmosphere. I'll also show you how to enrich your palette for a green-based summer landscape — bringing in colors you might not expect, so the greens come to life.

Questions time

About 4 hours total.

🤎 A Note for My Tree-Class Students

This workshop is a wonderful next step for everyone who took my previous tree classes — now we go deeper into trees with summer foliage, gaining the hands-on practice you need with my guidance beside you.

It's completely new material with new paintings, of course. And if you're new to my tree work,
you're just as welcome — everything you need is in the workshop itself.

Materials List

You can use the same materials concept as my other classes — just adjust your paper for the
number of sketches we make.

📜 Paper

  • 100% cotton, cold press, 300 gsm
  • For the warm-up studies: several sheets of 9×12" or A4
  • For Painting 1: one sheet of 9×12" or A4
  • For the final painting: one sheet of A3 or 12×16"

🖌 Brushes
Use the brushes you already work with and love — whatever sizes you reach for naturally for
washes, foliage, and details. A little variety helps here, since we'll explore how different brushes
shape the tree crown and foliage — so bring a few different ones if you have them (including any
old or worn brush you like for texture).

🎨 Paints — Watercolor Only
This is a watercolor workshop, so we'll work with watercolor paints throughout.

Use your usual color palette. We'll work with a mix of greens — warm and cool — soft shadows,
and rich darks. For your reference, here are the colors I use in most of my paintings:

  • Ultramarine
  • Sepia
  • Quinacridone Sienna (Daniel Smith)
  • Nickel Azo Yellow
  • Pink Quinacridone or Quinacridone Coral
  • Opera Pink
  • Olive Green
  • Dark Olive Green or any Dark Green
  • Light Blue (with white pigment) — I use Old Holland Scheveningen Blue Light

💚 And because this is a summer-trees landscape, we'll also play with different green colors. If you have greens you love, bring them along — we'll mix, layer, and enrich them together.

✏ Drawing & Other

  • Pencil + eraser
  • Paper for sketching thumbnails and composition
  • Water tank
  • Paper towels
  • Paper tape (for fixing your paper if you're working on loose sheets)

🌀 rhythm to connect an almost abstract scene 🍃 greens that stay alive — never flat or muddy 🌫 depth, air, and atmosphere on a flat sheet of paper

✨focal point, composition, and confident decision-making

So the next time a row of trees, a green hillside, or a quiet summer path catches your eye — you'll
know exactly what to do with it.
