About the Workshop

Water has its own language — and once you learn to read it, painting it stops being a guess and becomes a decision.

In this workshop, we will explore how to paint water in watercolor: how to understand it through values, how to "read" it in a reference, and how to translate that understanding into brushwork that feels alive, confident, and true.

We will build our understanding step by step — starting with theory, moving through quick studies of different water conditions, and finishing with two full paintings where everything comes together.

Because painting water isn't about copying a texture — it's about learning to see:

🔵 Part 1 — Understanding Water Through Values: reading water in references, values map, rules for reflections
🔵 Part 2 — Quick Studies: calm sea with small waves, larger waves, ripple waves, one underwater technique
🔵 Part 3 — Composition Sketches: planning both paintings

What We Will Explore

🔵 Part 1 — Understanding Water Through Values
We start with theory: how to "read" water in a reference through its values, how to build a values map, and the main rules for how reflections behave in water. This is the foundation everything else is built on.

🔵 Part 2 — Quick Studies of Water Conditions
Small, fast studies exploring different water conditions — calm sea with small waves meeting the shore, larger waves, ripple waves, and one technique for suggesting what's underwater. We won't cover every possible technique here — just an introduction to a few, so you leave with real starting points to keep exploring on your own.

🔵 Part 3 — Composition Sketches
We plan our two paintings through composition sketches: • Sea Bay with Rocks and Silent Water • Harbor Scene with Small Ships, Boats, and Reflections

🔵 Part 4 — Painting 1: Sea Bay with Rocks and Silent Water
Our first full painting, built on everything from Parts 1–3 — calm water, rocks, and quiet reflection.

🔵 Part 5 — Painting 2: Harbor Scene
A busier scene with small ships and boats, working reflections and water movement into a more complex composition.
