Birds are a symbol of freedom, beauty, and grace — and painting them is pure joy!
In this class, you will learn how to draw and paint birds using watercolor and mixed media, capturing their delicate forms, vibrant colors, and expressive character.
We will explore simple methods to sketch birds easily and naturally, select expressive color palettes, and use different materials to add depth and energy to your artworks.
Sophia shares her unique working methods, demonstrating how to build a composition, emphasize textures, and create rhythm in your painting through the interplay of color and dry media.
You will learn how to work in layers, how to create a balance between detailed and loose areas, and how to combine watercolor with graphic materials for a lively, fresh result.
Of course, we will pay special attention to the artistic structure and harmony of the image (as always!)
This master class is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists looking to strengthen their drawing and painting skills and discover new creative approaches.
Sophia Rodionov, an Israeli artist with international teaching experience, will guide you step-by-step through the process. 🕒 Timing: 2.5 Hours
30 Minutes:
• Understanding bird shapes and anatomy — how to quickly and accurately sketch birds.
• Key principles for drawing natural postures and dynamic compositions.
• Choosing colors and developing an expressive palette for birds.
• Types of contrasts to bring life and energy into your bird paintings.
• Q&A session.
1 Hour:
• Step-by-step painting of the Northern Cardinal (male) — focusing on bright colors, textures, and lively expression.
• Defining a creative workflow — from sketch to finishing touches.
• Q&A session.
1 Hour:
• Painting the vibrant Hummingbird — exploring color layering and expressive techniques.
• Methods to create motion and lightness in the painting.
• Q&A session.
Bonus Session:
• Quick demonstration of a Fairy Wren without pre-drawing — simple, joyful, intuitive painting.
• Open Q&A and feedback time — ask your questions, show your work, and get feedback!
🖌 Materials for the Master Class
Paper
• 2 sheets of watercolor paper (A3 or close to 30x40 cm)
• 100% cotton, 300 gsm, cold press or rough.
• A few sheets of drawing paper or a sketchbook for bird sketches.
Paints
• Your usual watercolor set.
• You are welcome to download Sophia’s basic palette in class introduction.
• Colors Sophia uses can be substituted or mixed — detailed notes will be provided during the class.
Brushes
• Soft flat brush for wetting the paper
• A set of round brushes — medium and small sizes for details and texture.
• Liner (rigger) brush for feather details and fine lines.
• You are welcome to download brushes set Sophia is using in class introduction.
Other Materials
• Two water containers.
• Spray bottle with clean water.
• Pencils: HB, 2B for sketching.
• Fountain pen or waterproof pen (sizes 0.3 and 0.5 recommended).
• Watercolor pencils or crayons (optional — for texture and layering).
• White gouache or white ink (for highlights).
• Paper towels, kneaded eraser.
This setup will ensure you are fully equipped for exploring both watercolor and mixed media techniques in bird painting!
