🌿 About This Stream

A squirrel perched on a mossy trunk, a mushroom held in one paw, painted loose enough to feel like it just landed there.

In this step-by-step streamed lesson, we paint one full watercolor piece on 12×16" cold press cotton paper: a squirrel caught mid-moment on a mushroom-studded tree trunk.

We start by reducing the whole animal, tail, body, ears, paws, even the mushrooms, into simple elliptical shapes, and use those shapes to work out where the light falls before a single wash goes down.

From there we move to watercolor paper with only a partial pencil drawing (just enough to feel safe, not so much that the water can't do its own thing), then build the fur with a properly wet-on-wet tail, layered glazes for volume, and plenty of lifting and softening to keep the edges alive.

You'll learn how to simplify any animal into three-dimensional shapes you can actually use, not just look at; how to decide which drawn lines help you and which ones you can let watercolor answer instead; how to keep warm and cool in balance across the fur so nothing goes flat or muddy; how to push and pull parts of the painting with soft and hard edges; and how to finish with confident, minimal dark accents instead of overworking every hair.
