Capture the Spirit of Cats in Watercolor
Cats are mysterious, graceful, unpredictable creatures — full of character,
elegance, and sudden bursts of energy.
In this workshop we will explore how to capture that living presence on
paper.
Rather than focusing only on careful realism, we will work on the beautiful
balance between loose watercolor flow and expressive precision.
Through quick studies and a larger final painting, you will learn how to create
a cat that feels alive, spontaneous, and natural — a painting that looks
effortless, yet is built on thoughtful structure and observation.
Our goal is to reach that exciting place between abstraction and realism,
where watercolor remains fresh and expressive while the character of the cat
still shines through.

During the workshop we will create three cat paintings:
🐾 Two quick expressive watercolor studies
🐾 One larger final painting combining loose watercolor and refined details

🖌 Workshop Structure

✏ Part 1 — Understanding the Subject

 Sketching, anatomy and composition

We begin by learning how to simplify the complex shapes of a cat.
This section will help you understand how to sketch cats confidently in many different poses, without feeling stuck by details.

We will explore:

  • Quick simplified anatomy of a cat
  • Breaking the body into simple shapes and volumes
  • How to sketch cats in different poses
  • Observing proportions and gesture
  • Composition ideas for placing a cat on the page

This is a drawing and thinking section that builds the foundation for painting.

Materials:
✏ Pencil or charcoal + sketch paper

🎨 Part 2 — Warm-Up Studies

Loose watercolor sketches

Next we move into watercolor with two quick studies designed to free your hand and train your eye.

We will paint:
• One simple pose study
• One cat in motion / action pose

You will learn how to:
• Capture gesture and movement
• Simplify forms while painting
• Use watercolor quickly and confidently
• Suggest fur, movement, and personality with minimal strokes

These studies help you enter a looser, intuitive painting flow before we begin the final piece.

Recommended size:
• 23 × 30 cm (9 × 12”)
or
• 28 × 36 cm (11 × 14”)

 🐈 Part 3 — Final Painting

Loose watercolor + expressive realism

For the final artwork we will paint a larger cat portrait where we combine:

  • Loose watercolor washes on wet paper
  • More precise work on the head and facial features
  • Subtle details that bring personality to the animal

This combination creates a painting that feels alive, spontaneous and expressive, while still keeping the recognizable character of the cat.

You will learn how to balance:
• abstraction and realism
• flow and control
• softness and detail

Recommended size:
30 × 40 cm (12 × 16”)
