About the Lesson
In this session, we will work with one of the most powerful (and honestly underrated) tools in watercolor â grouping through washes.
Using a beautiful Amsterdam architectural scene, I will guide you through a way of painting that allows you to simplify complex subjects, bring clarity to your composition, and create that effortless âeasy doneâ, slightly unfinished sketching look â while still keeping a strong, intentional focal point.
This lesson is a continuation of the Unity & Grouping module from the Architecture Sketching Course â but here we go deeper and more practical.
We will explore how watercolor washes and line work (pen or fountain pen) can work together, not compete â helping you organize the scene and guide the viewerâs eye naturally.
Â
What We Will Focus On
- How to group elements using watercolor washes
- Creating a clear focal point in a complex architectural scene
- Balancing loose washes with defined line work
- Achieving the âunfinishedâ, light, sketch-like feeling without losing structure
- Making composition decisions before painting (so you donât get lost halfway đ)

Lesson Structure
Â
âď¸ Part 1 â Composition & Approach
We begin with understanding the scene and making key decisions:
- What to simplify
- What to group together
- Where to place the focal point
This is where the painting actually starts, even before the brush touches the paper.
Â
đ¨ Part 2 â Step-by-Step Painting
We move into the full process:
- Building large watercolor washes
- Integrating pen or fountain pen work
- Adjusting, simplifying, and refining the image
Youâll see the full thinking process behind each step â not just what to do, but why.
