Stream "Street Lanterns in Watercolor & Mixed Media"
was live on April 05, 2026
Duration: ~1.5 hours
In this recorded stream, we work on a beautiful street lantern sketch in watercolor and mixed media — a subject full of character, structure, and decorative detail.
This session is all about learning how to approach a visually rich architectural object without getting trapped by too much detail.
We begin with a simple drawing construction, using basic perspective understanding to place the lantern clearly and confidently on the page. From there, we move into watercolor — building the sketch through light washes, tonal values, warm-cool balance, and expressive brush line work.
Instead of copying every ornament precisely, we focus on something much more useful:
- understanding the structure
- following light and shadow
- simplifying complexity
- creating the feeling of detail without overworking
- making the sketch more personal, loose, and alive
During the stream, we explore:
- how to sketch a complex lantern using simple perspective logic
- how to use watercolor washes to build form and atmosphere
- how to balance cooler and warmer shades for a natural result
- how granulation colors can enhance old metal textures
- how to finish with expressive brush line work instead of rigid detail
This is a wonderful study if you want to feel freer with architecture and decorative urban subjects, while still keeping clarity and structure.
