Stream "Landscape with river and fisherman in a boat”
was live on July 05, 2026
⏱ Total duration: 1.45 hour
A quiet river scene, three levels deep, with a small fisherman anchoring it all — this is a lesson in building a landscape that feels spacious and alive, not just pretty.
In this step-by-step streamed lesson, we combine two references into one composition: a background of hills and forest, a midground of trees and a small island, and a foreground of rocks with a fisherman in his boat. We plan the composition first — placing the horizon and our focal point off-center, using the golden ratio to keep the eye moving — then build the painting in three watercolor layers: a soft initial wash, mid-tone values, and finally the darkest darks and details that bring the fisherman to life.
You'll learn how to combine multiple references into one believable scene, create real depth using three spatial layers, plan your values before you touch a brush, paint water that feels textured and windblown rather than a flat mirror, balance warm and cool temperatures across a painting, and use light glazing and texture techniques to add volume without overworking the piece.
